Peter Salmon is an International Emmy and BAFTA winning director and producer working extensively in network, cable and premium television. He is a principal of independent production company Luminous Beast, which was behind the Sky Originals and NZonAir series INSiDE which won the 2021 International Emmy for Short-Form Series and the acclaimed mini-series AFTER THE PARTY for TVNZ and ABC, co-produced by Lingo Pictures, with The Guardian calling Robyn Malcolm’s performance “…among the best television portrayals in years, from anywhere in the world.” Most recently Peter directed the final three episodes of MADAM for Tavake and Fifth Season, starring Rachel Griffiths.
Peter is currently in production, setting up the Stan Original Series, WATCHING YOU Based on J.P Pomare’s novel THE LAST GUESTS, for Lingo Pictures. The series is a gripping psychological thriller, adapted for television by creators Alexei Mizin and Ryan van Dijk.
Peter has directed many shows in Australia and NZ; he set-up the legal drama AFTER THE VERDICT for Nine/STAN, was the set-up director on the Nine Network’s hit drama DOCTOR DOCTOR and directed multiple episodes on the ABC’s RAKE, starring Richard Roxburgh, and the Australian/US coproduction, HARROW starring Ioan Gruffudd for Hulu and ABC.
Other notable credits include HALIFAX: RETRIBUTION for the Nine Network, the CBBC/Seven Network/TVNZ co-production MYSTIC; the ABC’s striking modern retelling of Anna Karenina THE BEAUTIFUL LIE, starring Sarah Snook, which was nominated for an Australian Directors Guild award and Best Television Drama Series at the 2016 AACTA Awards; SECRETS AND LIES (later remade in the US) which earned him an Australian Directors Guild Award nomination; the multi award winning NOWHERE BOYS; and audience favorite OFFSPRING for Network Ten. Peter was a director on the second series of the acclaimed thriller/comedy WANTED for Matchbox Pictures, Seven and Netflix, earning him a New Zealand TV Award for Best Director for a Drama Program, before stepping up to produce its third series.
Peter began his career as writer/director on New Zealand’s teen comedy/drama BEING EVE. His other NZ credits include OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE, GO GIRLS and AGENT ANNA. Peter has written and directed award winning short films; FOG premiered in competition at Cannes Critics Week and LETTERS ABOUT THE WEATHER was awarded a Special Jury prize at Clermont-Ferrand. Peter has significant experience and knowledge in VFX and animation, having worked as the motion capture unit director on Weta Workshop’s international award-winning animated series, JANE AND THE DRAGON
