Kieran has been consistently active both in front of and behind the camera since graduating from drama school in Sydney in 1995. In 1996 he co-founded Blue-Tongue Films (winner of the 2010 GQ Award for ‘Creative Force of the Year’) and under the Blue-Tongue banner has now written, directed, scored and starred in a number of award-winning, internationally acclaimed short films and music videos. Kieran’s debut feature film as director and co-writer, WISH YOU WERE HERE, starring Joel Edgerton, Teresa Palmer and Felicity Price opened the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, where it was nominated for a Grand Jury Prize. The film was successfully released through Hopscotch Films in Australia and Level K internationally. In 2013, the film earned a number of AACTA Award nominations including Best Original Screenplay, Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Editing and Best Cinematography. The film won the Best Film at the Australian Critics’ Circle Awards in 2013. Kieran’s second feature film was THE DUEL, starring Woody Harrelson and Liam Hemsworth and was produced by Mandeville Films.
Kieran has recently co created/directed and wrote on the iconic series about John Ibrahim THE LAST KING OF THE CROSS for Paramount + and producer Mark Fennessy at Helium.
Kieran’s television credits include JACK IRISH for Easy Tiger Productions/ABC TV; WOLF CREEK series 2 for Stan; REEF BREAK for ABC Studios America.
In 2008 Kieran was awarded the IF Award for ‘Best Unproduced Screenplay’ for his screenplay MEMORIAL DAY. In 1995 he was awarded the inaugural ‘Australian Writers Guild and NSW Film and Television Office Mentorship Scheme Award’ for his first feature film screenplay LITTLE SKY CAMBODIA.
As an actor Kieran’s feature film roles include – TWO HANDS (1999), THE CAVE (2005), SEPTEMBER (2007), THE SQUARE (2008), ANIMAL KINGDOM (2010) and THE REEF (2010).
Music videos and photography by Kieran Darcy-Smith have led to collaborations with some of Australia’s top mainstream and independent artists, including: Powderfinger, Alex Lloyd, Kasey Chambers, You Am I, Amiel, Shane Nicholson and Troy Cassar-Daley.
